I joined EcoTeam when I was in grade 11 the same year my friend 'founded' it. I really wanted to do something to help and at that time I wasn't doing any volunteering. I had also never done any environmental work so I thought it would be interesting.
I've really enjoyed my time on the EcoTeam. I've learned a lot about composting and recycling that I never knew. Like that plastic zip-lock bags are recyclable. It’s been very educational.
While I’ve been involved, I have learned to be very protective of our Earth and now when I go for walks I bring a bag and pick up the garbage and recyclables I find. I think a lot of people would learn a lot by joining this group and taking action. I really encourage people to come join us! I promise you’ll love it, it’s very rewarding work.
I will miss being a part of this group but I will try to make a change while I’m in university. Thank you everyone for all the fun! I’ll miss you!

Hi, my name is Amy and I am a proud member of the Eco-team. I joined the Eco-team when I was in grade 8 because I love this planet and I want to preserve it for future generations. I am in grade nine now and my favorite hobbies are: horseback riding, swimming, reading, and recycling!!

"The Eco-Team is just a great group of people doing what's
right for the environment, and I think everyone should know that.
I joined because I wanted to make some change eco-wise in the
world and also because it felt like I belonged there.
Sometimes it's not always easy to belong."

After feeling a little helpless and apathetic with the plethora of world issues, I started trying to find ways to make a difference. I first heard about and joined the Eco-Team in grade 10 and instantly felt welcome and loved by all the earthlings. We're a big fuzzy, earth-loving family all doing our part to look after our home. We are all mobilizers of change both locally and globally, and I can't wait to continue this awesome path to a better world with the coolest people around.

I joined the ecoteam because Miss Peacock and her students inspired me to help make a difference. I believe in the great work the ecoteam does and I feel that if eco conscious attitudes are instilled in kids while they are young they will carry them into adulthood.

Joining the Eco-Team was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made at school. I remember first walking into the unknowns of Mrs. P’s room and instantly feeling at home. I’ve met so many great, like minded, fun and passionate people through Eco-Team and have made tons of wonderful memories with them. Whether we are churning up the compost or learning the “Paddle Dance and Song” with the Kumugwe first nation’s group, my time with the Eco-Team is worthwhile and rewarding. Our natural world, particularly the oceans has always been a deep passion of mine. SCUBA Diving has brought me closer to the wonders of our waters and I strive to do everything I can to preserve life here and promote others to as well. I feel that the work we do on the Eco-Team helps and inspires me to do my everyday part for the environment. Little by little, we can all put forth positive actions and mould the world into a more peaceful, healthy and harmonious place to be. Over and out Earthlings!

In 2008 I wanted to make a change that would better myself, my school and the environment. The thought of a "Highland Eco-Team" resonated with me and I just had to jump on the chance to make a difference. Not long after, the dream came to life as everyone sprang into action creating a composting program, running assemblies, gardening and so much more. The Eco-Team was reality but it wasn't just the core group that made a difference, it was the entire school and staff that worked hard to shift into a environmentally aware set of mind. I love being a part of this optimistic and vibrant group. They inspire me to work hard for what I believe in and reassure me everyday that we can save the world. Together we can do anything.

My name is Kristy Lloyd, I am 14, and I joined the eco team because I feel that I need to do as much as I can to protect the world we live in. Unfortunately I cannot do that much so I am starting with our town and school. I am a big nature lover and to see all the garbage lying around and all the broom and weeds just kills me inside and makes me want to do something. I also love animals, and knowing I can do something about saving the north east woods and cleaning up is a huge reason I joined the eco team.

I've always been an avid recycler as well as a constant composter, and was thrilled to find a warm and welcoming group like the eco-team where I could help to change the views of our school concerning environmental awareness. It has been an honour working along side the team helping to shape not only Highland, but the community aswell, into a caring ecologically aware society. Go Earthlings!
Quinn
Hi! My name is Quinn Welsch. I recently joined the eco-team but being environmentally friendly has always been important to me. I joined the eco-team because I believe in creating a sustainable culture at Highland Secondary. My favourite part of the eco-team is composting and working in the garden. I love animals (especially bunnies), recycling and pink.

Sam is going to miss the EcoTeam but is happy to have left the EcoTeam in wonderful hands. EcoTeam4Lyfe.

I joined the eco-team when my friend, who was already involved, just wouldn’t be quiet about it she talked about it all the time, so eventually I felt like I had to check it out! I came for a meeting and immediately felt at home, so many like-minded people all there for the same reasons. I’m really excited to get started on the new year, see you all there on Mondays!"

I am the proud den mother of Highland's Eco Team. Every day I am amazed and motivated by the conviction of the team and Highland students to make positive environmental change. Like many environmental activists, I sense the real change will come from our youth, who will have to pick up after several lost generations. When we send our 1000 students into the community with sensititivity to and awareness for our earth, we are changing the world.
Our children may save us if they are taught to care properly for the planet; but if not, it may be back to the Ice Age or the caves from where we first emerged. Then we'll have to view the universe above from a cold, dark place. No more jet skis, nuclear weapons, plastic crap, broken pay phones, drugs, cars, waffle irons, or television. Come to think of it, that might not be a bad idea. ~Jimmy Buffet, Mother Earth News, March-April 1990
