AWARENESS IN THE COMMUNITY
The Eco-Team has become a major factor in the community through organized presentations and workshops. Not to mention that we have done many events in conjunction with other organizations like the Regional District, and the Comox Town Council. We are a voting member of the Green Team of Comox Town Council, helping to make important environmental decisions within our community as well as being a representative for our generation. The Team is also working with BC Hydro and the Regional District in order to create a more sustainable environment in hopes of creating a better future for everyone.
The Eco-Team's community endeavours -
Comox Council Green Team:
The Eco-Team has been working with the Comox Council Green Team since the fall of 2009. We are one of five voting members and are working towards the ultimate goal of making the Town of Comox carbon neutral by the year 2012. The team also puts together a Green Team newsletter to be distributed every few months, providing information on the town's green initiatives, as well as environmental work being done in the community and interesting facts on how to live more sustainably.
Comox Valley Regional District:
Since the beginning of the 2010 year the Eco-Team has been involved with the Comox Valley Regional District. Together we are looking to create an efficient solid waste management program for the Regional District. This involves evaluating our current program, from residential recycling to recycling depots as well as education centers, like the "Compost Education Centre" in Courtenay, but most importantly, coming up with a waste management plan for the next 10 to 30 years to help the Comox Valley attain waste management goals.
Sierra Club:
The Eco-Team attends Sierra Club meetings regularly and has presented at some Sierra Club events, such as the inaugural meeting in September 2009. Our team tries to support the Sierra Club as much as possible in their ventures.
Broom Pulling/ Garbage Clean-ups:
At numerous points throughout the school year, the Eco-Team sets up Broom pulling and garbage clean-ups within the community. School wide clean-ups of the town take place occasionally during AG and on Earth Day. Broom pulling usually takes place in the spring months to remove the Broom before it blooms.
